For the past three years, the SARA team has proudly represented New Jersey students at the National Advocacy Conference (NAC), joining youth leaders from across the country to champion stronger, more equitable STEM opportunities. Each year, our students have traveled to Washington, D.C. to share their experiences, discuss barriers to access, and advocate for policies that expand hands‑on STEM learning for all communities.
During these visits, SARA members have had the unique opportunity to meet with Congressman Frank Pallone and Senator Cory Booker, Senator Bob Menendez, and Senator Andy Kim. In these conversations, students highlighted the importance of legislation that directly impacts STEM education, including the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and the CHIPS & Science Act. By sharing personal stories from classrooms, robotics teams, and community outreach, SARA advocates helped illustrate why sustained investment in STEM programs matters for the next generation of innovators.
Their efforts came at a pivotal moment. In January 2024, President Joe Biden’s approval of additional STEM funding under the CHIPS & Science Act marked a significant step toward expanding opportunities nationwide. This decision reinforced the message SARA students had been bringing to Capitol Hill: that accessible, high‑quality STEM education is essential for preparing young people to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological world.
SARA’s continued presence at NAC reflects our commitment not only to STEM learning but to empowering students as leaders, advocates, and changemakers. By elevating youth voices in national policy conversations, the team is helping shape a future where every student, regardless of background, has the chance to explore, create, and succeed.
